One thing I thought about that didn’t make it into the article is that Cats is reminiscent of the wave of children’s properties becoming the most popular books and films among adults (Harry Potter, Marvel & DC superhero movies, Toy Story, the Disney remakes, Katniss Everdeen stuff, etc.)
