Lately elements within the Republican Party are making speeches and TV appearances, demanding that the USA “declare war” on the Mexican drug cartels. This is bullshit, 100%. Let’s talk about it.

The United States, by way of the DEA and the CIA, has been deeply enmeshed in the activities of the Mexican drug cartels for decades. A good way to summarize the present state of the relationship between the USA and the cartels is thus:

There are two major factions of cartels in Mexico. One of these, let’s call them The Old Cartels — Sinaloa, Jalisco, Beltran, Guerreros, Golfo, Juarez, and Michoacan are the big players on that side. They’ve been mortal enemies at times, but right now they’re all clanned up. Allied with this clan is the MORENA government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO as they call him in Mexico. You say that like, “Ahm-Lo”, not “Ay Em El O” — this is how they do it in Latin American countries. Like they don’t say “Dee Ee Ay” but “Day-ah”. AMLO is, in my humble opinion, one of the most dynamic and important figures in international politics. He is fantastically popular in Mexico.
